Travel lite

About 9–13 · Worlds, UA regionals, first real travel

The weekends that travel. U.S. Kids majors / Worlds. UA regionals. A first HJGT Open if the local numbers say they belong. Not 20 starts.

A week on this rung

Nights after the other sport. Family on the weekend.

2–3 weeknights

Home weeks: 2 nights, routine + short game. Travel weeks: pack, sleep, don’t sneak in a range session the night before.

The weekend

The event is the weekend. Worlds / UA regional / first HJGT Open. The other weekends: family 9 and a home local so the year isn’t only hotels.

  1. Home Tue / Thu. 20 min: boring routine, then up-and-downs from 20. Then stop.
  2. Travel Friday. Arrive. Short putt. Early food. No extra 40 balls.
  3. Event weekend. They play. You caddie and drive. That’s the job.
  4. Home Sunday after. Off. Protect the series.

You, this week

  • Budget the hotel before the ranking.
  • 6–8 honest starts beat 18 mediocre ones.
  • Re-hash hole 8, not hole 2.

Clubs that fit

UL7-57 / UL7-60 or first custom junior. If they compete, get lie and length checked, not a boxed adult set.

Where they compete

  • U.S. Kids majors and World Championship (5–12 is the World’s home)
  • Under Armour Junior Tour regionals
  • Hurricane Junior Golf Tour Opens (8–18) — Opens before Majors
  • Keep a home U.S. Kids / UA local so the year is not only hotels

How We Practice this week

Pre-shot routine until it is boring. Three-hole matches vs you from their tees. Up-and-down games from 20 yards.

Up and down from 20

Up & down · 20 min · Course

Ten balls around a green, different lies. Putter lives in the bag until the chip is done.

Chip then one putt. Keep a score out of 10. Beat last week.

Ten. Not until the bucket is empty.

YouTube · Golfing World. Watch it, then do the version written above — shorter, and you stop on time.

HORSE from 15 yards

Up & down · 15 min · Course

They play from 15 yards. You play from 25. Same flag. Small stake: loser buys the slushie.

Call the shot (bump, regular chip). Make the up-and-down or take a letter. First to HORSE walks in.

One game. Protect the series.

YouTube · Peter Finch Golf. Watch it, then do the version written above — shorter, and you stop on time.

Drawback

Putting · 12 min · Course

Start at 4 feet. Make it, stay. Miss, the next putt is one grip farther away.

Get back to 4 feet. That’s the game. They keep the tees.

If they’re putting from 20 feet in anger, you already lost. Reset to 4.

YouTube · Operation 36 Golf. Watch it, then do the version written above — shorter, and you stop on time.

Boring routine

The rest · 15 min · Range

Ten balls. Same club. They must: look at a target, take one rehearsal, step in, go.

If they skip a step, the ball doesn’t count. You are the referee, not the coach.

Ten honest reps beat forty wiggly ones.

YouTube · MAKE THE TURN. Watch it, then do the version written above — shorter, and you stop on time.

Three-hole match vs parent

The rest · 45 min · Course

They play their tees. You play from farther. Small stake: they pick dinner if they win.

Match play. You do not give putts you wouldn’t give in a tournament.

Three holes. Protect the series.

Titleist gate

Putting · 12 min · Course

Two sleeves of balls (or two tees) just wider than the putter. 4–6 feet.

Stroke through the gate. If you clip a ball, it doesn’t count. Make 10 clean. Michael Breed / Titleist.

Ten clean. Then one from 8 feet without the gate.

YouTube · Titleist. Watch it, then do the version written above — shorter, and you stop on time.

Your job

Budget the travel before you budget the ranking. One honest season of 6–8 starts beats 18 mediocre ones.

If they dread Sundays, you overshot. Drop back a rung. That is allowed.
